Stone Size Guide - PDF Printable

Graphic shows 8.5" x 11" printable black and white guide with drawings of jewelry sizes

One day, standing in our jewelry workshop, I was evaluating the size of some different stones with a guide I'd made. I wanted to see what kind of jewelry I might be able to make from them, which can be difficult to picture without a reference. I could just use a ruler, but there's something more tangible about comparing the stones to a guide with each jewelry piece printed to scale.

All of a sudden, something clicked. One of the most frequent questions I get via DM and email is whether or not a stone is large enough to shape into our custom necklaces, earrings, cufflinks, and rings. Up until now, I've told people to make sure their stone is at least 1/16" larger than the finished jewelry they want to order. What would be even better than that? Sending you the guide that I use myself!

How to Use Your Guide

Print the guide at actual size (100% scale) on 8 ½” x 11” paper. Do not select “fit to page” in your printer settings, as it would distort the scale. The guide includes a 1 inch / 1 cm box so you can confirm that it printed correctly.

After printing your guide, you'll see that it includes both a side profile and a top profile of each Bring Your Own Stone jewelry piece you can make with your stone. Hold your stone next to the profiles to check that your rock is at least 1.5mm (1/16”) larger on all sides than the finished jewelry you’d like to make.

After Assessing Your Stone

Is your rock large enough? Fantastic! You’re ready to place your order.

Make sure you click 'Add Personalization' on the product page to add any customizations you'd like to make, like selecting of of the 80+ ways you can custom engrave your piece, plus your chain length, chain style, and clasp style for necklaces. After completing your order, you'll get an email with instructions about how to send us your stone.

Is your rock too small for the jewelry you want to make, or are you not sure if it will work for Waystone jewelry?

Send us an email with a photo of your jewelry, and any specific questions or concerns you may have. Be sure to include a ruler or a coin in the picture of your stone so I can assess its size. We have some tricks up our sleeve to make smaller stones fit larger settings.
